Poker in its purest form, has been around for centuries, dating all the way back to 900 A.D., when Chinese Emperor Mu-tsung is said to have played domino cards with his wife.

These “domino cards” set the stage for what we now call poker, using a ranking system of cards or dominos combined with the skilled art of bluffing one’s opponents to win the game.

3 Card Poker (or tri-card poker as it’s also called) is an American version of a British game called Brag. This game originated over three hundred years ago as a game known as Primero, a fast-moving betting game using only three cards. As the game evolved, it became known as Post-and-Pair and then again as Brag. This game made it to the States as Casino Brag and Brit-Brag, but eventually evolved again into the game we now know as 3 Card Poker.

Poker actually encompasses a wide variety of games, from 5 Card Stud and Heinz 57 to Texas Hold ‘em, Three Legged Race and of course, 3 Card Poker. Each game has its own unique rules and strategies, but are all based on the ancient ranking system and that much-coveted ability to bluff.

In the past, bluffing could be achieved through a combination of playing actions – such as raising your bet - along with body language, leading your opponents to believe you had a winning hand when you really had nothing at all. The birth of the online casino removed the body language aspect, making it even harder to bluff your way through a game.

In 3 Card Poker, this bluffing technique is removed completely as you’ll soon see, making it all the more important to have a solid strategy when you sit down to play.

But even with the best strategy, you can’t win all the time whether you’re playing at a land based casino or an online alternative. There are then, a few tips that will help you get the most enjoyment from your play without spending your life’s savings in the process.

Take advantage of bonuses. Some online casinos offer bonuses to new players. Take advantage of this and spend less of your own money.
Pick your game wisely. Know the stakes and evaluate the play. Is it worth your time to play at this casino?
Set a time limit. While it might seem unspeakable to suggest that you walk away from a winning streak, 14 hours at a casino table, land based or otherwise, is simply not healthy. Take your regular breaks by all means but don’t let them substitute for a regular sleeping schedule.
Stay sober. This might sound like a given but that doesn’t mean its not worth repeating. It’s easy to spend money when you’ve been drinking – so much so that many casinos comp the bar bill to their big spenders. But if you want to win, you’ll need a clear head and a sharp mind, both of which are seriously diluted by too much alcohol.
