The police in Taichung, Taiwan have busted an online gambling ring that was being masqueraded as a High-Tech Cloud Computing Company.
The police detained fifty-six suspects for questioning with a 37 year old woman with the surname Lin being amongst them. According to the investigators, Lin was the leader of the illegal operation which catered mainly to Chinese players in China and Southeast Asia.
Lin was allegedly previously employed at an online gambling company and it was there that she gained her IT and business experience to start up and register the Cloud Computing Front Company at the beginning of this year.
Taichung Sixth Police Precinct Chief Lin Shu-hui, however, revealed that Lin was actually operating online gambling websites that offered Slot Machines, Roulette, Baccarat, Lottery, Sic Bo as well as Sports Betting.
Police reported having seized 245 Desktop Computer sets and seven Notebook Computers and that, judging by the records, there were more than 10,000 players on the company’s books and Lin also ran a VIP service for High Rollers.
The police also revealed that according to records found, the online gambling ring generated a turnover of more than NT$ 100 million (US$ 3.6 million) during its four month period of operation.
There were over 200 people employed by the company who worked in three shifts at its office with several being university graduates and a number of them holding Master’s degrees. The employees were paid high wages with a guaranteed basic salary of NT$ 40,000 for new staff while middle-level staff were able to earn as much as NT$ 100,000 per month.
