Online gambling operators across Europe have boosted their efforts to promote safer gambling to their customers over the past 12 months. The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) recently released its Annual Sustainability Report in which it highlighted the increased commitment demonstrated by the industry in ensuring customers are protected from gambling-related harm.

EU Operators Double Down on Safer Gambling Efforts

According to the latest sustainability report from the EGBA, members of the association sent 45.5 million safer gambling messages to their customers in 2022, up 20% from the previous year. Almost half of these messages (48%) were personalized and created according to the customer’s actual gaming behavior. The figure also represents a 40% increase from 2021.

The past year also saw a 60% rise in the number of customers using safer gambling tools. According to the report, a total of 18.4 million customers used at least one safer gambling tool in 2022, with deposit limits being the most utilized. Operators also significantly increased their contribution to problem gambling research, education, and treatment (RET), with the figure hitting €49 million, up 109% from 2021.

Greater Engagement Needed

EGBA’s Secretary General Maarten Haijer has welcomed the positive progress made by operators, but more needs to be done. In particular, the trade body has called for greater engagement, responsibility, and cooperation among stakeholders in promoting safer gambling.
