Players in West Virginia now have the opportunity to place bets on their favorite sports via mobile applications, thanks to the fantasy sports betting group, DraftKings.  A mobile app was launched in West Virginia by DraftKings on Wednesday this week and players are now able to place wagers.

The chief compliance officer of DraftKings, Timothy Dent, said that he was very happy and pleased that West Virginia decided to “do it right” and allow mobile sports wagering.

“New Jersey did, but not all other states have followed that path,” he said.

Geo-technology ensures that all bets are placed within West Virginia’s borders, as per legislation passed by the state. It is not a requirement that the person placing the bet is a resident; only that he or she is physically present in West Virginia when it is placed.

Multiple forms of sports are available on which to bet, including college sports and professional sports.

Dent said that it was important for DraftKings to go live before the beginning of NFL season. He added that it took a lot of coordination, patience and the building of infrastructure to launch the sports betting platform, but that the DraftKings team managed to pull it off in time.

The DraftKings app used by West Virginians is the exact replica of the one already available to players in New Jersey.
