DraftKings has revealed that it has beaten its rivals by becoming the first operator to accept legal online sports bets in New Jersey.
The state’s authorities granted the company a waiver for a soft launch on Wednesday, 1st August 2018 at 6 pm EST, with a condition that it would initially be done on an “invite-only’ basis.
The New Jersey’s Division of Gaming Enforcement also made it a condition that the hours of operation and number of customers be currently restricted. In order to play, it is necessary for DraftKings customers in New Jersey to download the iOS or Android app and wait for an invitation before being allowed to place a bet.
The first legal mobile bet to be placed on American soil outside of Nevada was a punt of a mere $5 on the St. Louis Cardinals run line, with a possible $12 win on the MLB game.
According to a spokesperson for DraftKings, this ‘invite-only’ period will give them an opportunity to stress test the product and make sure that it meets the high standards of the Division of Gaming Enforcement, and theirs.
A launch party was held by DraftKing’s staff at their headquarters in Boston, while Jason Robbins, Chief Executive Officer celebrated their market entry via Twitter, saying that the amazing team at DraftKings had worked tirelessly in order to launch their sportsbook app and be first to market in New Jersey. He added that he is extremely proud to work with such an inspiring group of employees, investors and partners.
DraftKings is partnered with Resorts Atlantic Casino and the pair intends opening a sportsbook in the property in the near future.
