The New York sports betting industry generated $125 million in January alone, essentially lining the state up to be the best earning in the United States in 2022.

New York’s gambling authority, the NY Gaming Commission, gave data showing that within the first 24 days of operating, the state’s online sportsbooks took in $1.67 billion out of the total $1.69 billion accepted overall through online and retails books.

In the first 24 days of January, 2022, an average of just under $70 million was wagered per day online in New York.

According to industry analysts, New York has broken all records for wagers placed in the first month of operation by a state.

Mobile sports betting went live on January 8th in New York, planned so that punters could bet on the NFL playoffs.

New York’s tax rate of 51% on its sports betting industry is one of the highest tax rates in the country and, as a result, raked in $63.3 million in taxes for the state government in January.

Highlights of NY January 2022 Mobile Betting Numbers

  • Caesars Entertainment generated $59 million in revenue from $627 million in wagers which it handled. FanDuel produced $28.1 million in revenue.
  • New York generated $124.1 million in gross gaming revenue overall.

Betfred Sports has extended into the Arizona sports betting market as the state reaches record figures in its growing market.

At the start of the year, Betfred made a soft launch into Arizona and last week announced that the launch had been fully and successfully completed.

According to the Chief Operating Officer of Betfred Sports, Bryan Bennet: “I could not be more excited to expand our Betfred Sports betting apps into the Arizona market.”

Arizona has seen an incredible growth in its sports betting numbers. The leading gambling authority in the state, the Arizona Department of Gaming, announced a new record when $499.2 million was bet in December 2021.

This was an increase from November’s sum of $466.7 million and October’s $461.1 million.

In a statement last week, the director of the Arizona Department of Gaming, Ted Vogt said that with a new record set for total wagers and payouts in December, he was excited to see the continued strong start to the state’s event wagering and fantasy sports market.

The leading operator in Arizona, out of the 11 operators, is by far DraftKings, which controls just under 30% of the mobile market. Close on their heels is FanDuel Sportsbook with 26% and BetMGM Sportsbook.

Arizonans place their bets almost exclusively via mobile sportsbooks, with 99% of the amount bet ($494.5 million) made through mobile devices.

There were hopes that the three-year old colt co-owned by the late cricket legend Shane Warne would win his race in Ipswich, Queensland in a sentimental victory in his honor. However, hopes were dashed when Sacred Oath, who was favorite to win, was pushed dangerously into the rail by other horses in race 2.

Sacred Oath managed to remain on his feet, although jockey Ryan Maloney was sent crashing to the tracks and blacked out when he hit the deck. Luckily, he wasn’t trampled by the other horses and was back up after being treated by ambulance staff.

Sacred Oath was owned by Warne and some of his Australian friends, including sports presenter Hamish McLachlan and actor Shane Jacobson.

His friends spoke of their disappointment after the accident, saying that they had hoped that Sacred Oath could deliver a victory to honor Warne who died from a heart attack in Thailand last week. He was just 52 years old.

Ryan wore a black arm band during the race in Warne’s memory.

Many punters placed smaller bets on Sacred Oath in the lead up to the race, in memory of the one of the greatest cricketers of all time. During his career, he scored more than 3,000 Test runs and remains the highest Test runscorer without a century. He retired from international cricket in 2007 but regularly worked as a media commentator on Australia’s Nine Network.

New sports betting legislation was introduced in the Minnesota House this week by Reps Zach Stephenson and Pat Garofalo.

If the bill passes successful, all adult residents will be able to wager on sports on mobile devices and through brick-and-mortar properties.

The bill’s sponsors say that the revenue generated from a legal and regulated sports betting industry in Minnesota will benefit the community, such as providing grants to youth sports teams in high-crime areas.

Said Zach Stephenson: “This legislation will bring about the most significant change to Minnesota’s gaming laws in many years. State lawmakers in the Minnesota House have crafted a thoughtful bill based on respectful consultation with sovereign tribal nations, professional sports teams, experts in problem gaming, and many other stakeholders. This is the year we get sports betting done in Minnesota.”

His co-sponsor, Pat Garofalo added: “The current sports gambling black market is indefensible. A majority of states have abandoned the underground market and instead chosen a legalized sports gambling marketplace. It is time for Minnesota to do the same.”

The bill now heads to the Commerce Finance and Policy Committee and has a hearing set this week.

Minnesota lags behind other states in the upper Midwest who have already legalized sports gambling, including North and South Dakota, Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin.
