Cory Zeidman, the 61-year-old professional poker, was arrested yesterday on charges of fraud and money laundering in a sports betting scheme. He was charged with receiving $25 million from victims who believed that Zeidman’s company had insider information on sports events and paid to receive this data to better their chances when betting on sports.
Zeidman’s organization ran radio ads, which were broadcast across the US, claiming that they had a “sophisticated white-collar approach to gathering sports information”.
As per the Homeland Security Investigations in New York: “As alleged, Zeidman preyed on individuals who were led to believe he had inside information that would lead them to easy money. In reality, he was selling nothing but lies and misinformation — bilking millions from victims along the way, leaving their lives in financial ruin and their bank accounts empty.”
Zeidman is a 2012 World Series of Poker bracelet winner.
He faces federal charges of conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud, as well as conspiracy to commit money laundering in a scheme that spanned 16 years (2004 to 2020). His alleged victims paid a fee to obtain the so-called insider information and many of them lost their life savings.
Zeidman was the alleged head of the organization and used various aliases such as Richard Barnes and Ray Palmer over the years.
Ben Warn, the sports betting industry expert and executive, has announced that he will not seek re-election on Sportech’s board when his term expires at the end of this month.
Warn has been serving as a non-executive on the board since June 2020.
Previously, he acted as managing director of sports data group Perform, heading their portals and consumer division.
Speaking about his decision, Warn said that he was extremely proud of what Sportech achieved through “incredibly challenging global conditions.” He wished the group continued success in the future.
Over the past two years, Sportech has drastically downsized by divesting some of its key assets. BetMakers bought over its Global Tote arm, while Bump 50:50, Sportech’s raffle technology supplier was bought by Canadian Banknote.
Because of this drastic downsizing, Sportech removed its shares form the London Stock Exchange and moved to the Alternative Investment Market.
In August last year, Sportech announced that two of its executives, CE Richard McGuire and CEO Tom Hearne would be stepping down from their roles as the group continued to reduce in scale and size. This, after a complete evaluation of Sportech’s business lines and the disposing of a number of important assets, as noted above.
This week, Sportech said that Warn had “supported the transformational change in the group.”
In a lucrative new four-year deal, it was announced that the online sports betting and casino operator, BetWarrior will become the official sponsor of the Argentina national football team. The partnership was signed with the Argentine Football Association (AFA).
The president of AFA, Claudio Tapia, said that the association welcomed BetWarrior onboard. He said that the AFA is working hard to generate resources to improve the economic strength of the organization and the clubs that form part of it.
“Without a doubt, in this important year, we redoubled our efforts, and we are focused on generating new agreements in this direction,” he said.
The deal with BetWarrior also includes sponsoring the world-famous Copa Argentina, a festive football competition that takes place each year in the South American country. Other national tournaments also fall under the umbrella of the sponsorship deal.
“For BetWarrior, we are proud to be a sponsor of the Argentine soccer team and of this team that has won the affection of the people,” said the marketing director for BetWarrior, Santiago Gandara.
“BetWarrior is a unique product in the industry, a new and original model in the country, a platform of Argentine origin that seeks to lead the way for the future of the betting industry in LATAM. And for that, there is nothing better than being with the Argentine team.”
The annual NCAA tournament was a huge hit for Iowans in March this year, with numbers showing that $223.5 million was bet on sports in land and online casinos. This was 44% higher than March 2021.
One of the major changes since last year is the fact that players don’t need to first visit a physical casino in order to bet online. This convenience factor clearly played a huge part in getting players to bet on their favorite basketball teams during the tournament, as they could simply play from their home computer or mobile phone.
Industry analysts also believe that sports betting has become much more mainstream in the past year, which explains why nearly 50% more people wagered on the tournament compared to the same month only one year ago.
Sportsbooks also keep upgrading their technology so that their customers can make live bets as the game is underway, adding to the entertainment value.
The majority of bets ($208.2 million) were made using mobile apps, compared with just $25.2 million bet at retail sportsbooks.
The DraftKings-operated Crown Gaming handled $64.8 million of bets, while American Wagering was the second largest handler with $49 million worth of bets put through this platform.
In total, the state garnered just under $1 million in tax revenue in March, 2022.
