The British Horseracing Association (BHA) will be meeting this week in order to discuss when racing can recommence, despite the fact that the UK remains in lockdown due to the ongoing novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

Racing is not scheduled to resume until the end of this month at the earliest after having been suspended since 18th March 2020.  The BHA initially revealed that it would stage horse racing behind closed doors before announcing a full suspension.

A nationwide lockdown was introduced by the UK government on 23rd March and despite the fact that this was due to expire on 13th April, the restrictions remain in place.  The government will decide later this week as to whether the measures will be extended or eased in some form.

There is currently a ban on public gatherings of more than two people and the government also intends stopping all emergency services support for mass gatherings.

The Covid-19 Racing Industry Group’s Resumption of Racing Group has, however, been working with racecourses, horsemen and other stakeholders i006E an endeavor to re-commence racing behind closed doors as soon as possible.

The group has concentrated on a scheme that will allow racing to restart on a daily basis with horse racing under strictly controlled conditions at locations that meet certain criteria, but not until approved by the BHA board and government.

Richard Wayman, BHA Chief Operating Officer commented that they are liaising with government as part of their development of a responsible, coordinated plan for the return of sport when they are told it is safe to do so.
