Some of the top names in the Australian betting industry, including Betfair, Sportsbet and Entain, have said that they will support a proposed ban on the use of credit cards to bet online.

The companies were represented by Brent Jackson, the chairman of Responsible Wagering Australia, of which they are all members.

At present, an inquiry has been set up into regulation of the use of financial services such as credit cards and digital wallets for online gambling in Australia.

“As a policy-based body we want to achieve the best outcome for consumer protection,” said Jackson in his opening address at the start of the inquiry. “We think that the best way of achieving this is by committing to transparent discussion and actively working with stakeholders to make sure we provide the best outcomes.

“Australia’s major online wagering operators will support development of measures to prohibit credit card wagering.”

Responsible Wagering Australia has committed to working with the country’s banks to make the prohibition of credit card wagering a reality if need be. Operators say that they will seek the assistance of banks and payment processing providers to ensure the change can be delivered, without adversely affecting the industry and the players’ gaming experience.

“Responsible Wagering Australia members acknowledge concerns expressed by policymakers and the community sector and will seek to develop measures which harmonise the online environment with gambling at clubs, pubs and casinos where credit card use is prohibited,” promised Jackson.
