Chile continues to make significant progress on plans to launch a regulated online gambling market by the end 2023. The Economic Committee of the Chamber of Deputies is due to publish 15 new articles as part of the legislative framework of Bill 035/2022.
Offenders to Face Prosecution
The Committee recently notified stakeholders of the latest development, saying the new articles will focus on criminal penalties for operators found violating the country’s online gambling regulations.
According to Treasury Undersecretary Heidi Berner, the new articles will establish the legal framework for the prosecution of operators involved in criminal activity linked to online gambling.
This marks the first time that the Chilean government is taking such a step as it aims to regulate online gambling and ensure a transparent and safe online gaming environment for customers.
Chile to Tackle Unlicensed Gambling
Among the articles set to be published seek to address unauthorized gambling operations as well as penalize criminal activities associated with online gambling, such as corruption, fraud, and cybercrimes.
Earlier this month, a special committee was also set up to address the issue of betting partnerships which has been the subject of a dispute between the Ministry of Justice and the National Association of Professional Football (ANFP), the latter opposing orders from the Justice Ministry to ban gambling sponsorships.
