The state of Victoria has introduced new laws that will see Crown Melbourne implement a cap on pokies, along with many other reforms aimed at ensuring the casino is held to account after it was rocked by a massive money laundering scandal.

Cap on Pokies and Cash Use

Under the new reforms, customers at Crown Melbourne will be required to place a maximum gambling limit before they can play pokies. In addition to that, the casino will also introduce a cash spending limit of up to $1,000 per 24 hours to fight money laundering. Patrons who intend to spend more than $1,000 must use a casino-issued card. They will also be asked to present an ID.

Furthermore, Crown Melbourne must hold one bank account to be used for customer deposits.

Full Implementation Expected by December 2025

The gambling limit on pokies could come into effect by the end of 2023, with the full implementation of the reforms expected to take place by December 2025.

The new measures are among the strongest in the world and are aimed at preventing Crown Melbourne from committing similar failings and misconduct, according to Gaming Minister Melissa Horne. The remaining recommendations from the royal commission will be implemented by next year.
